This is actually from American Vogue

I mean, the underwhelming set design is a dead giveaway and it's no secret that Grace Coddington is an incredible stylist but I haven't responded this strongly to anything in Vogue for years. I actually bought the October issue—as opposed to stealing it from a doctor's office or something—because of these clothes. It's all about a giant coat right now. A giant coat is chic and super functional because you can comfortably wear a blazer under it, conceal a pregnancy, or gain or lose 50lbs without having to buy new clothes. It's totally genius.

Under the Pink

Although I'm largely indifferent about Miss Minaj nowadays I fully support her foray into the celebrity fragrance biz. The bottle for "Pink Friday" is one part Avon, one part Metropolis, and totally fucking amazing. It may smell like the Victoria's Secret PINK™ store at your local mall but does that really matter?

Bedtime Stories

So I watched The Maids on YouTube the other day out of desperation. Watching the film wasn't desperate but watching such a low-quality version felt wrong, like watching Last Year at Marienbad on an iPhone at the gym or something. But it looked great regardless, I forgot how amazing the set was. Especially that bed, God I want that bed. And the tent-like chiffon garment that Susannah York is wearing.

R.I.P. Helen Gurley Brown

I always found it difficult to relate to Cosmopolitan for a variety of reasons but I have to give Helen Gurley Brown props for her role in the sexual liberation movement and the 30+ years of amazing Scavullo covers that she brought to the magazine. I collect back issues of Cosmo (mostly for the covers) and now would be the opportune time to share them but I'm currently 3,000 miles away from New York. But in the meantime, here are three recent acquisitions that I posted on Instagram a few weeks ago. That bikini!

Snoop Lion

Just when you thought Snoop Dogg couldn't get any better he changes his name to Snoop Lion and releases a reggae album! Apparently our favorite rapper found his true Rastafarian self on a recent trip to Jamaica and will release the new album this fall along with a documentary. We can almost hear the Humboldt Hippies rejoicing, pretty sure it sounds like this

♀ Free Pussy Riot! ♀

This post is long overdue. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pussy Riot, they are a radical feminist punk band from Russia and my personal heros. They wear balaclavas to conceal their identities and stage incredible public performances which protest the oppressive Russian government and specifically, Vladimir Putin. Three members of the group, Yekaterina Samutsevich, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were arrested in March following a performance at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. The band jumped on the altar (where women are not allowed to stand) and performed their song "Punk Prayer" which highlights the relationship between Putin and the Russian orthodox church. The video is posted below, it's even more punk rock than the last scene of Times Square. But unfortunately the three girls who were arrested, who might not have even been there, are being charged with "hooliganism." In Russia hooliganism is practically synonymous with terrorism. They are facing seven years in jail, which is obviously total bullshit. Not to mention entirely politically motivated.

For further reading check out this recent article from The GuardianTobi Vail also wrote an amazing piece about them awhile back.  I also want to encourage everyone to donate to their legal defense fund and take action via Amnesty International. These girls are incredible and in need of public support. Free Pussy Riot!

Vogue Italia Bambini

After I graduated from college I was a freelance photo researcher, most of my clients worked in the fashion industry. At one point I did a massive research project on children's clothes and subsequently discovered dozens of back issues of Vogue Italia Bambini from the late seventies and early eighties. I have hundreds of images from these magazines on my computer and at one point I was planning to devote an entire blog to them but now it makes more sense to post them here regularly. Below are a few of my all-time favorites, I especially love the mini-Bianca at the end of the post.
